SUNY began a system-to-system partnership with the Turkish Council of Higher Education (YÖK) in 2000, developing relationships between 11 SUNY institutions and 7 Turkish universities. The star program of the partnership is an undergraduate dual diploma program in 16 academic fields which has enrolled more than 3,100 Turkish students, including more than 1,600 graduates thus far.
The dual diploma program received the Andrew Heiskell Award for Innovation in International Education from the Institute of International Education in 2007, under the category of international exchange partnerships.
In 2004, SUNY established an office in Turkey, located at YÖK, to coordinate the programs and work with students and the consular sections of the U.S. Embassy and Consulate on the visa application process. The office is now focused on promoting the programs and SUNY, attending a variety of fairs and making presentations in high schools and to other audiences throughout the country. In addition, the office serves as liaison between SUNY campuses and their partners and assists in the development of new programs. The office is currently located in Istanbul (Büyükdere Cad. Meydan Sok. No:1, BeybiGiz Plaza Kat:15 D: 55-56, Maslak Istanbul 34398)
