Teaching DEISJ - Constructions of Class Identity and Power
February 14, 2025, 10:00 AM-11:00 AM

This 60-minute webinar will provide an overview of how to teach about Class within the DEISJ general education requirement. We will discuss how a pedagogical focus on class can both include and move beyond inclusion of multiple class identities. We will touch on ways that class intersects with and often undergirds many DEISJ topics, but is nevertheless frequently left out of specific readings or course learning objectives.

Presenters: Carla J. DuBose-Simons, Westchester Community College and Milo Obourn, SUNY Brockport

Teaching DEISJ - Critical Disability Studies and Intersectional Ableism
February 21, 2025, 10:00 AM-11:00 AM

This 60-minute webinar will provide an introduction to Critical Disability Studies and ways that the ability/disability binary intersects with and impacts DEISJ topics and content. We look at histories of disability rights and disability justice and reflect on ways higher education has furthered ideologies of ability that have marginalized and silenced disabled perspectives and voices.

Presenters: Lorna Perez, Buffalo State University and Milo Obourn, SUNY Brockport

Teaching DEISJ - Developing DEISJ Content Across the Curriculum
March 7, 2025, 10:00 AM-11:00 AM

This 60-minute panel-style webinar will include examples from technology, science, and engineering courses, as well as trades and other applied programs. This panel seeks to broaden awareness of where and how DEISJ-related materials can be brought into areas that have historically not focused as heavily or explicitly on issues of gender, race, class, power, and social change in the classroom. Panelists will share specific examples and answer participant questions.

Panelists: Andrew Hyzy, SUNY Erie; Rajesh Sunasee, SUNY Plattsburgh; Angela Graves, Alfred State; James Zollweg, SUNY Brockport; Carla DuBose-Simons, SUNY Westchester Community College

March 28, 2025, 10:00 AM-11:00 AM

This 60-minute webinar will present theoretical and innovative pedagogical approaches to artificial intelligence, as it relates to issues of equity, social justice, and power. Panelists will address relationships between human bias and artificial intelligence as well limitations of and opportunities for using AI to teach about historical and current inequities.

DEISJ Faculty Network

The DEISJ faculty network is a moderated digital platform for DEISJ work supported by SUNY DEISJ fellows. It provides a space to share resources for pedagogy and scholarship related to issues around diversity, equity, inclusion and social justice. As part of this work, it provides a platform for discussion and resource sharing for those who are teaching infused or standalone courses that fulfill the SUNY GE Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice requirement. It also seeks to support networking opportunities for faculty working in DEISJ departments and programs across the SUNY system. Membership is limited to SUNY faculty, staff, and administrators. Those engaged in the network will contribute to the overall goal of making the tenets of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice part of the culture across SUNY.

If you would like access to the DEISJ Faculty Network email DEISJFellows@suny.edu; if you are already a member, click the button below to read or contribute posts to the network.
