Institutions of higher education have worked hard to build diverse campus communities where all students can feel welcome. Sexual misconduct policies and prevention programs are two avenues in which institutions can reflect and uphold their commitment to inclusivity. In this interactive session, we will examine our own assumptions about who experiences and perpetrates sexual violence, and take a critical look at sample sexual misconduct policy language and programs to analyze: what assumptions about gender or sexual orientation, expression, and/or identity are embedded in this content? What language is used to express those assumptions? And equally important, who is missing? Participants will leave with frameworks and tools for helping make policies and programs more inclusive of LGBTQ+ students, as well as additional resources from the field.
