SUNYNet Managed DNS
With Managed DNS, we are committed to our goal of providing primary and secondary nameservers for SUNY Campuses and offices state-wide. Historically, we have utilized on-premises servers for this service but as industry best practices have encouraged migrating to the cloud, we now offer this service via DNS Made Easy.
Customers are provided the option of utilizing Managed (Primary) or Replication (Secondary) servers to replace or complement their existing nameservers.
Service Overview
- DNS Made Easy provides SUNYNet with eight nameservers distributed across fifteen global datacenters. The DNS service is managed by SUNYNet NOC staff from the System Administration offices in Albany.
- SUNYNet provides record and zone administration on behalf of the customer. NOC staff is available during business hours, during scheduled maintenance and by appointment after-hours to commit DNS record or zone changes.
- (Optional) Campuses may request co-management of their own zones and add/remove/modify records at their leisure.
- (Optional) Customers may utilize up to five primary servers and three secondary servers.
Benefits:
- Servers are hosted off-site and globally to ensure availability of name resolution without the need for dedicated rack space or virtual resources.
- Customers may utilize up to five (5) primary or three (3) secondary nameservers.
- SUNYNet NOC personnel serve as an extension to the IT department's staff to offload the tasks for managing a dedicated DNS solution.
- DNS Failover can be leveraged to automatically or manually switch records to another IP address during a planned or unplanned interruption of service.
